About the community group/organisation/individual

The Southland Indoor Bowls Centre officially opened in Onslow St in Invercargill in 1981.

It is the regional sports organisation for the sport of indoor bowls, with a membership of more than 400.

The centre is used by three indoor bowls clubs, and hosts numerous indoor bowls events, including the Southland championships.

The facility is also used by other community group, including leisure marching training, craft shows twice a year and was available for hire for functions.

 What the grant went towards

The ILT Foundation provided a one-off grant of $150,000 towards the cost to replace the roof of the Southland Indoor Bowls Centre.

What the grant means to the community group/organisation

“It’s a god-send to protect the facility,” Southland Indoor Bowls Centre president Graham Low said.

“We want to retain the facility because we can’t pick the floor up and go somewhere else.”

The Indoor Bowls Centre is hosting the Australian vs New Zealand Trans-Tasman test match in May, the first time it had been held in Southland.

[Replacing the roof] means we can host similar events going forward, Mr Low said.
